Story

The story

After returning from an overseas medical cooperation project, Ethan Carter and his son Noah walk into a family gathering they never expected. Relatives who rarely appear have filled the house, and in the center sits Ryan Brooks, tearful in the arms of Ethan's wife, Evelyn. Before Ethan can speak, Ryan throws himself at Noah, claiming to be his real father. Noah rejects him coldly, and Ethan answers with his fist. Then Evelyn makes her announcement: Noah, she says, was conceived through IVF using Ryan's sperm, not Ethan's, and she wants a divorce and the Carter Group.

The relatives seize the moment, demanding Ethan step down from the company and from the family. But Ethan stays calm. He knows exactly what happened in that clinic years ago, and he has his own reasons for refusing a paternity test. Noah stands firmly at his side, and when a young man bursts through the door calling Noah "brother," the room freezes again.

Opening excerpt

After my son Noah and I returned home from an overseas inspection of a medical cooperation project, we froze.

A huge crowd had gathered. Even the distant relatives we normally never saw had all shown up.

Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought the Carter family was holding a full-blown family reunion.

The person who stood out the most was Ryan Brooks, sitting in the middle of the couch with red-rimmed eyes.
