Story

The story

Five years after breaking up with Matthew, Prince runs into him at a friend's wedding. They pretend to be strangers, but a half-drunk friend whispers that every girlfriend Matthew has had since looks a little like her—except Natasha, who has lasted longer than anyone. Prince only smiles awkwardly; she has come back to get married.

At the gathering afterward, Matthew carries Natasha from the car and drinks for her, while Natasha needles Prince with barbs and questions. When Natasha asks why Prince's boyfriend did not come, Prince says he will arrive at midnight. Matthew pushes a glass toward her, asking her to split Natasha's drink, and Prince refuses, reminding him that Natasha is his girlfriend, not hers.

As the games begin, Natasha spins the bottle and it lands on Prince, demanding a truth. Prince answers that she came back to get married, and Matthew's eyes never leave her.

Opening excerpt

After the ceremony ended, my half-drunk friend pointed at Matthew and whispered to me,

"After you two broke up, every girlfriend he's found has looked a bit like you. We all know they were substitutes for you."

"But this Natasha by his side now—not only has she stayed with him longer than anyone else, she doesn't look like you at all.
