Story

The story

Dominic De Luca has always called Clara by another woman's name. He calls out for Bianca to set the table, and signs birthday cards to Bianca. Clara left Boston and gave up a promotion to follow him to New York, believing that meant he had finally chosen her.

Then, on the terrace of the Long Island estate, Dominic kneels and asks Bianca to marry him. Guests surge forward, phones raised, and Bianca is swept to the centre of the crowd. Dominic's eyes find Clara, but his father is watching and the ring slides onto Bianca's finger.

Clara walks away and accepts a position in London. When Dominic comes home, she tells him she is moving out.

Opening excerpt

Dominic De Luca always called me by his ex-girlfriend's name.

When he cooked, he would call out from the kitchen without thinking: "Bianca, come set the table." The birthday gifts he gave me came with cards that read: "Happy Birthday to my love, Bianca."
