Story

The story

Elara has been married to Carter Hayes for nearly three years under a secret contract: a marriage of convenience kept hidden from everyone, ending in two months with a five-million-dollar payment. When Carter's first love, Serena Croft, runs a red light and hits Elara, Carter arrives and pretends not to know his own wife, leaving his assistant David to handle the compensation.

Elara has loved Carter since he became her guardian and mentor, but he has never hidden that his heart belongs to Serena, the woman he has loved for ten years. A supplementary clause in their agreement warns her that any feelings overstepping into his personal affairs will count as a breach of contract.

With the contract's end approaching, Elara begins planning her exit, even as Carter's gaze lingers on her bleeding knee and the secret of their marriage threatens to surface.

When Carter arrived at the scene, she let out a sigh of relief.

"My boyfriend's here," she announced to me. "Just tell his assistant what you want for compensation."

Carter wrapped his jacket around her shoulders. Then his brow furrowed as he stared at my bleeding knee, his gaze lingering for a long time.
