Story

The story

When Luther Smith is rushed to the emergency room after a car accident, his son-in-law Easton calls his wife Meg Smith, a lawyer, again and again. She refuses to listen, choosing instead to stay with Hugh Reid, her first love, and accuses Easton of lying to get her money. By the time the truth is clear, Luther is gone.

Days later, Easton watches Meg defend Hugh in court for the drunk driving that killed her own father. She wins his acquittal, and Easton asks for a divorce. Only then does Meg begin to panic, still believing her father is alive.

Luther's last words to Easton were a plea to leave her.

I called my wife, Meg Smith, who was a lawyer, more than twenty times before she picked up.

“What are you doing now? Hugh ran into trouble, and I’m helping him. Please don’t be a nuisance.”
