Story

The story

Sophie's parents have just opened a luxury hot spring resort, and they gave her the very first black membership card. When it vanishes from her dorm room, she assumes it slipped behind her desk — until her father calls to say a girl claiming to be her roommate is treating their entire class to a VIP spa night on Sophie's "tab," believing the card covers everything.

Sophie knows exactly who took it. Brooke Higgins, the roommate who has tormented her all semester, mistook the discount membership for a limitless gift card. At the Serene Springs Resort, Brooke basks in her classmates' admiration, sneering at Sophie and her friends while ordering premium liquor and demanding the resort be closed to the public.

Sophie quietly lets her dig deeper, warning Brooke once that the bill will climb past fifty thousand dollars — and that defrauding an innkeeper is a felony. Ego wins. By morning, the bill is due.

Opening excerpt

I didn’t have time to use it, so when it went missing from my dorm room a week ago, I didn’t think much of it. I figured it had just slipped behind my desk.

But tonight, my phone buzzed. It was my dad.

"Sophie, sweetie," he said, sounding confused. "Did you forget that your card only provides a discount? It isn't a pre-paid debit card."

I frowned, leaning back against my headboard. "I know that, Dad. Why?"
