Story
The story
Past midnight, Dr. Madeline Weaver is jolted awake by frantic pounding and the voice of Liam Bennett, her neighbor from across the hall, begging her to save his six-month-old daughter Lily. As she reaches for the deadbolt, glowing text flickers before her eyes, warning her not to open the door. The messages claim the infant has no vitals and that Liam waited twenty-four hours before seeking help, planning to pin the death on her.
Through the peephole, Madeline sees Lily lying unnervingly still while Liam's mask of grief slips, revealing a simmering intensity. When Sarah steps out and whispers that this feels wrong, Liam snaps at her to shut up. Neighbors gather in the hallway, and Liam accuses Madeline of heartlessness, turning them against her. Jason films the scene, threatening to post her address and destroy her reputation.
Trapped between her oath and the warnings only she can see, Madeline must decide whether to open the door to a family she once trusted, knowing that one choice could cost her everything.

It was past midnight, and I was just about to surrender to a much-needed sleep when a frantic pounding erupted at my front door.
"Dr. Weaver! Madeline! Open up, please! It’s an emergency!"
"My baby... she’s burning up! She’s not moving! You have to help her!"
It was Liam Bennett’s voice from across the hall. He and his wife, Sarah, had a six-month-old named Lily. We’d been neighbors for two years.
I threw off the covers, my doctor’s instinct overriding my exhaustion.
