Story

The story

For two hundred years, Sera has guarded the Aster family, her life bound to the sacred Heartwood buried on their estate. When she warns her husband, Julian Aster, that the tree's destruction means her death, he once dismissed it as a fairy tale—until his childhood friend Isabella Duvall scrapes herself on its bark. To spare her a scar, Julian has the Heartwood torn out himself, and Sera's power drains away in glowing ichor.

Gray-haired and failing, Sera tells Julian's grandmother Henrietta that her debt is paid and only three days remain. Henrietta begs her to forgive Julian and spare the family a curse, but Julian parades Isabella through the house, mocks Sera's fading body, and orders the Heartwood chopped up and burned. As the flames consume it, Sera feels every blow, while Julian credits Isabella with saving his life—a life Sera once bought with her own blood.

With her vow broken and her soul tied to the burning wood, Sera can only watch the family she protected turn on her.
