Story

The story

When armed robbers storm a kindergarten, a bomb is strapped to a small boy and the nation's finest bomb disposal expert, Nolan Hart, is called in. His wife Brielle watches from the command van as Nolan lets his first love, Summer Castellano, cut the wire for the thrill of it. The countdown collapses from ten minutes to ten seconds, and Nolan and Summer flee the blast.

Outside, Brielle finds her son Finn Hart safe beside her: he and Summer's boy, Wyatt Castellano, had swapped clothes that morning. Nolan and Summer refuse to believe the child trapped inside is Wyatt, and Nolan strikes Brielle down when she begs them to go back for him.

Brielle carries the charred, barely breathing Wyatt to a hospital, where Nolan and Summer block the emergency room to have Summer's scrape treated first. She screams the truth at them: the boy is Wyatt.

Opening excerpt

My husband, Nolan Hart, also known as the best bomb disposal expert in the whole nation, arrives at the scene immediately. Meanwhile, I stand by the monitor in the command van, my eyes glued to the screen.

I can see a burlap sack covering Finn's head. My poor son is trembling violently out of fear.

But once Nolan and his assistant-slash-first love, Summer Castellano, enter the scene, the latter actually has the guts to ask for permission to dispose of the bomb.

"Nolan, let me have a taste of what it feels like to be a heroine who gets to save lives. Is that okay?"
