Story
The story
After a late-night shift, a young man named Liam shares a cup of instant ramen with a runaway girl he mistakes for someone else. When he boasts that his ex-girlfriend, Sophia Laurent, outshines any woman, the girl's face twists strangely — and she calls him "bro-in-law." Five years after a quiet, mutual breakup, Liam still has no defense against anyone who resembles Sophia, and now her little sister sits beside him, prying into why the two ever parted.
Liam insists things simply didn't work out, but the truth is heavier. During their three years together he lived in dread of her family, and the year they split they were still in love, worn down by a world that punished Sophia for choosing him. She refused an arranged match, and the company she had built was destroyed; blacklisted, she ended up waiting tables in the dead of winter, her hands raw and swollen.
As the girl presses for answers, Liam must decide how much of that unfinished story he can bear to tell.
Opening excerpt
1
Getting off my late-night shift, I treated a runaway kid to a cup of instant ramen.
The girl didn't have a dime to her name, but she was all bravado, insisting that once she was back home, she’d set me up with her older sister.
I mumbled a refusal through a mouthful of noodles, telling her there was someone I still couldn't get over.
