Story
The story
At nine, an explosion took Wes's hearing and nearly killed Blair. She begged their parents for an engagement, promising to care for him forever. That promise ends at eighteen, on graduation night, when Blair pulls the hearing aid from his ear before Carter and half the senior class and tells him she wishes he had died in the fire.
Wes says nothing. He changes his university commitment and breaks the engagement, but weeks earlier his parents had taken him to a specialist in Zurich, and his hearing is fully restored. When Blair fits the hearing aid back and smiles, Wes tells her they are finished and walks out.
She follows him home through the storm with a gift, refusing to accept that it is over.
