Story

The story

Sarah teaches at the school where her fiancé, Ethan Thorne, also works, and the two are childhood sweethearts now discussing marriage. Then a love letter from the quiet student Lily Evans lands in Ethan's bag, and Lily confesses to him loudly before the whole class. As Sarah watches, strange comments appear before her eyes, narrating a teacher-student romance between Ethan and Lily and dismissing Sarah as a vicious older woman in the way.

The Dean summons Sarah and warns her about how badly such a scandal can end, and mentions that Ethan has been sponsoring Lily for a year. When Sarah calls Lily's parents, they curse her and hang up, saying only a sucker would pay for the girl's schooling. A colleague explains that Lily's family took her out of favour after a baby boy was born and once beat her at the school gate.

Sarah begins to wonder who Lily really is, and what the comments around her mean.
