The story

Just before leaving for college, Diane stumbles across a livestream of herself three years in the future, sobbing in a wedding dress and warning that her childhood sweetheart Craig and her mother have quietly canceled her enrollment so she can spend a year cooking, cleaning and organizing study notes for Gwen, the neighbor's daughter. The broadcast ends in horror, and a call to the admissions office confirms the cancellation is real.

At home, Craig and her mother press Diane to start dinner for Gwen, and the truth surfaces over the meal: she is not going to college but staying behind to look after Gwen. When Diane demands to know who comes first, Craig says nothing, and her mother's answer is a slap and a threat to cut her off. Diane names her price for the year of servitude, and the money arrives.

Yet a message from her mentor Peyton Walsh offers another way out, and a visa that will be ready tomorrow.

Opening excerpt

Just before I left for college, I stumbled across a livestream showing me three years in the future. I wore a wedding dress, and my eyes were red from crying.

"I'm marrying Craig today."

I smiled, assuming they were happy tears.

Craig Eaton and I grew up together, and I wanted to marry him ever since I was six.

"But I don't want to," she continued. "Craig was supposed to drive me to Halcyon University.
