Story
The story
Beverly has spent two years since college paying for everything: the mortgage, the car, her parents' prescription copays, her brother Zack's school expenses, even the clothes her sister Coral charges to her credit card. Coral earns eight thousand dollars a month but gives every spare cent to charity in rural Appalachia, and their parents and Zack praise her as the family's pride.
When Beverly finally asks Coral to keep part of her paycheck for the household, Coral calls her selfish and heartless, and her parents and Zack take Coral's side, accusing Beverly of jealousy and laziness. Crushed by the debt and the blame, Beverly accepts an isolated three-month transfer to Alaska, reports her credit cards lost, and cancels every automatic payment.
Now she waits to see how the family that calls her the embarrassing child will survive without her.
Opening excerpt
Because my parents always claimed they treated my sister and me completely equally, they expected us to split the burden of supporting them down the middle.
But while my sister, Coral, makes eight thousand dollars a month, she has never contributed a single dime to our family. She donates every spare cent she has to impoverished kids through a charity in rural Appalachia.
