Story
The story
Federal bomb-disposal tech Sam Mercer arrives at the Grand Regency hotel, where a suspected device has been reported. Before he can show his badge, Lexi, the intern he has been stuck with for three months, tells the police that his bag holds detonators and timers and that he threatened to blow the hotel up. Officers level their weapons at him and Captain Briggs takes him in for interrogation.
Inside the ballroom, a Ghost-7 is ticking toward zero, and Sam is the only man in the state who can disarm it. He begs Briggs to let him work, warning that the local EOD lead, Merlin, cannot handle the triple-nested fuse. Lexi then claims Sam caused a training accident, is on the verge of being fired, and has been stalking the office. Briggs orders him taken to the precinct.
As three hundred children and their families fill the hotel for the National Youth Piano Competition, Sam sits cuffed in the command van, watching the clock run down.
Opening excerpt
The yellow police tape flickered in the wind, a thin plastic barrier between the world and the nightmare inside. I stepped toward the line, reaching for my badge, but the detective blocked my path.
"There’s a suspected explosive device inside," he barked, hand hovering near his holster. "Back away, civilian!"
I was halfway through pulling my ID when Lexi, the intern I’d been stuck with for three months, let out a choreographed gasp.
