The Second Life of Miss Popular

After her mother marries into the Vance family, Hazel Hayes falls for her stepbrother, Ethan Vance, at first sight. She chases him relentlessly until they wed, but his coldness never thaws. One night at a bar she overhears him tell a friend their marriage is only responsibility, payment for a drunken mistake. Dazed, she steps into the path of a speeding sports car and wakes at seventeen, back at the dinner table where she once burned her fingers cooking porridge for Ethan.

This time Hazel serves her stepfather first, lets Ethan go without a bowl, and asks the family driver to take her to school instead of him. Her mother, who sacrificed so much to protect her from her biological father's debts, is startled by the change, and Ethan's hand stops awkwardly above her schoolbag. At school her deskmate Lucy accuses her of being possessed when she opens a math book during morning study hall.

Hazel vows to mend her past regrets and never chase Ethan again, yet he seems unable to let her go.
