Story

The story

Harper Vance is locked inside her own home by her husband, Carter, who fears she will ruin his concert date with Bella, the young woman his family took in. When a fire breaks out, Harper calls Carter for help, but he dismisses her plea as a pathetic lie and refuses to return. She barely escapes with her life, her legs severely burned.

Recovering in the hospital, Harper learns that Carter gave away the concert tickets she had fought scalpers for, and that he now demands she publicly apologize to Bella and even claim the two are not married. When Harper refuses, Carter threatens divorce. Bella visits the burn ward with flowers, knowing Harper is severely allergic, and Carter takes Bella's side.

Harper contacts a lawyer and hands Carter divorce papers. Then she learns she has been suspended from her research project, accused of inserting plagiarized sections into Bella's paper out of jealousy.

Opening excerpt

My husband locked me in the house because he was afraid I'd ruin his concert date with his "little secretary."

When a sudden fire broke out, I called him for help, begging him to come back. All I got was his impatient dismissal:

"Can't you be a little more mature? I just gave your concert tickets to someone else. Do you have to hold a grudge against a young girl and make up such a pathetic lie?"
