The story
Silas Vance is an acoustic architect who designs soundscapes for concert halls and classified rooms, and his ears are his livelihood. In his new top-floor apartment, sealed with soundproofing and triple-pane glass, he tests a bone conduction monitoring headset at 2:20 AM. Through the ceiling comes a viscous scraping, like fingernails clawing into concrete, and beneath it a deep, resonant hum. The spectrum analyzer locks onto fourteen hertz — infrasound, below the threshold of hearing but strong enough to stir nausea, panic and a nosebleed.
There is no floor above him, only a sealed-off phantom mezzanine. The rooftop door is bound with a brand-new industrial combination lock and packed with high-density acoustic foam, a violation no ordinary building would commit. The property manager, Frank, drops his cigarette at the question and insists it was only wind, then turns away.
Someone is hiding whatever moves above Silas, and the fourteen-hertz vibration is crawling through the ventilation ducts toward his bedroom.

I expected to hear the sleeping breath of the city. Instead, what I heard was a sound coming from the ceiling directly above me — a scraping, like fingernails clawing desperately into concrete.
