Story

The story

Julia Blake wakes to find herself back in the mahogany-paneled room of her first life, facing her sister Mary, who slides a black credit card across the desk: five million, back pay for the years Julia spent away. A condo in the Seaport District is already closed on; Julia must be gone by sunset. Mary explains that Theo, the boy swapped with Julia at birth and raised in luxury, lands in the ER from the stress of her presence. This time Julia takes the card and asks for fifteen million instead, signing a total severance agreement and walking out of the estate without the driver or the car.

Days later she hands the whole sum to Leo Henderson, CEO of the struggling Ascendant Tech, taking a fifteen percent stake, then heads to an executive finance intensive. There she crosses paths with Theo, who mocks her seat at the big kids' table and boasts of his place on the Blake Holdings investment board. He also mentions Dr. Nadia Keller, a researcher Mary humiliated after she begged for five million.

Julia remembers that name from her previous life, and what that investment will one day be worth.

Opening excerpt

My sister, Mary, sat across from me. Her eyes—usually bright and sharp with an effortless, predatory confidence—were currently clouded with a headache. she rubbed her temples, her gaze landing on me with a heavy, unmistakable flicker of annoyance.

She slid a black credit card across the polished mahogany desk. Her voice was flat, Brookline-steeled, and utterly non-negotiable. "There’s five million in there. Consider it back pay for the years you spent... away."
