For four years, a wife works three jobs to support her husband Edward Godfrey through his PhD while he battles ALS. She guts fish at a seafood market before dawn, washes dishes by day, and runs a food stall at night, losing two pregnancies along the way. She has never once set foot on his campus.

At his hooding ceremony, which she attends in secret, Edward thanks his wife onstage — a woman who stood beside him in the lab. Photos of the two of them together fill the screen. Back home, she finds his locked drawer open and a diary inside, naming Margot Danby, along with receipts for baby supplies and a luxury apartment down payment dated the day of her second miscarriage.

When Edward steps out to take a call, she records him promising Margot a divorce once he secures a faculty position. Then she finds Margot's posts: a sonogram, a housewarming invitation, and a home bought with her money. At the rehab center, a nurse reveals Edward was discharged two years ago, fully recovered.
