Story

The story

A young woman dies beneath collapsing concrete after her sister Savannah panics during a rescue and triggers the rubble to crush her. Her mother, told that only one daughter can be pulled free, chooses Savannah without hesitation, then refuses to dig for her second child at all. When she opens her eyes, she is back in her bed hours before the earthquake that killed her.

She has two hours. She races through the apartment complex waking every neighbor, then rouses her parents and leaves Savannah sleeping, letting her mother take on that task. She and her father escape into the street as the building folds in on itself, burying her mother and sister in the ruins.

When rescue crews arrive, she steers them away from the rubble she remembers, saving an elderly neighbor first. Hours later she points her father to the spot where his wife and daughter lie trapped, and the same impossible choice returns. This time Savannah begs to be saved and calls her mother a replaceable housewife, while her mother listens to every word.

Opening excerpt

Without a second of hesitation, my parents screamed, "Save Savannah first!"

My sister echoed them from the dark, screaming, "Save me! Save me first!"

The firefighter had repeatedly warned us not to move a muscle during the extraction.

But Savannah didn't listen. She panicked, violently shoving at the debris around her.

The shifting weight triggered a collapse, and I was crushed to death under the concrete.

When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the day of the earthquake.
