The story
At eighteen, Aubrey Hayes sold herself to a man ten years older to cure her mother. He turned out to be Julian Vance, head of the Shang Group, ruthless in business yet unbelievably gentle with her. He bought a dessert shop because she liked its cakes, flew home overnight from an international meeting when she had a fever, and took her to see the aurora, promising to stay by her side every year. She believed she was loved.
Then a woman named Yasmin Blake introduces herself as Julian's ex-girlfriend, the one he proposed to seven years ago. She offers Aubrey fifty million yuan to leave him, then proposes a bet: both will message Julian, and whoever he answers first wins. When Julian coldly asks Yasmin for her address, Aubrey realises every tender gesture may have been meant for another woman.
Aubrey accepts a study-abroad place she had once given up, and circles the departure date on her calendar. Fifteen days remain before Julian's birthday, and the suit she designed for him lies in the trash.
