Story
The story
Scarlett returns to her small town after three days away to find her mother, Patricia, has arranged an engagement party for Scarlett's boyfriend Ryan and Daisy, the sweet but developmentally challenged girl from the corner store. Patricia, chair of the local community outreach program, insists she is only protecting the vulnerable, and Ryan claims he has a secret to explain. When Scarlett is told to greet Daisy as her sister-in-law, she walks out, then returns to confront them.
Scarlett has spent years watching her mother favor Daisy, ever since her father died saving Daisy in a car crash. Her job, her groceries, and her clothes all went to Daisy, and now Ryan has been handed over as well. Ryan finally admits he must marry Daisy because she is carrying his child. Scarlett threatens to tell everyone the truth, and both Ryan and her mother panic.
Scarlett holds an acceptance letter to a graduate program far away, and leaving may be the only way to put herself first.

Our neighbor asked her:

Mom just brushed it off. “Scarlett’s more than capable, she can find any guy she wants later. Daisy rarely gets marriage offers. As chair of the local community outreach program, I naturally need to look out for the vulnerable first.”
