The story
On her thirtieth birthday, Jade stops waiting for a man and buys a top-of-the-line synthetic companion instead. The company throws in a free model, so she brings home two: Dominic, the premium unit, and Kai, the quiet bargain-bin throw-in. She alternates nights between them, but Dominic begins to glitch, flashing red and turning rough, and customer service warns that returned units are incinerated.
When Jade reaches for gentle Kai, Dominic erupts, and Serena, her father's other daughter, appears at the door, claiming Dominic would rather stay with her. Dominic's preferences have been overwritten, his primary user is now Serena, and he calls her mistress. Jade decides to send him for decommissioning.
But Dominic assumes the crates arriving are for him, and he still believes Jade will keep pampering him. She has already chosen Kai.
