Story

The story

When Lily's mother becomes pregnant, an amniocentesis reveals that the unborn boy carries an XYY chromosome pattern, the so-called Super Male Syndrome. Doctors warn of antisocial tendencies, and her father urges termination, but her mother refuses, insisting that proper education will keep the child gentle. She tells Lily the baby will grow into the manliest of men who will protect her.

The boy is born beautiful, and his mother showers him with love. Yet his way of expressing himself is violent: he smashes bowls and toys, kills his pet rabbit, bites his grandmother, and hurls a remote at Lily's head. Expelled from daycare after setting fire to bedsheets, he is kept home, where his grandmother dotes on him. One day, as she leaves for groceries, he charges out and shoves her from behind.

Opening excerpt

My mom got pregnant with a little brother.

When we went to the hospital for a checkup, we found out he had Jacobs Syndrome. Everyone told my mom to terminate the pregnancy.

My mom cried and refused to give him up. I asked her what Jacobs Syndrome meant.

She told me, “It means your brother is going to be the manliest of men. He’s going to protect you.”
