Story

The story

Maya's college campus closes early for spring break, so her brother Liam collects her in his new SUV. A sticker on the dashboard marks the passenger seat as belonging to his girlfriend, Tiffany. When Tiffany video-calls mid-journey and sees Maya sitting there, she erupts, demanding a new car and calling Maya shameless. Liam, torn between his girlfriend and his family, sides with Tiffany and tells her she matters most.

At home, Maya's parents learn what happened. They decide Liam needs a new girlfriend and take Maya to buy her own car, with the same budget Liam received. Tiffany arrives at the dealership uninvited, arguing that the family's money belongs to Liam and therefore to her, and that Maya should stop being supported. Liam's attempts to calm her end with her biting his arm.

Maya chooses a white SUV, and the family goes to lunch. When her mother mentions buying Maya a condo nearby, Tiffany shrieks that homes in their neighborhood cost two million dollars, drawing stares from other diners.

Opening excerpt

My parents told me they had just bought my brother, Liam, a brand-new car, and that he would pick me up to bring me home.

Excited, I hopped into Liam’s shiny new SUV. I paused for a second when I saw a custom sticker on the dashboard in front of the passenger seat: "Princess Tiffany’s Seat."

Liam gave an awkward laugh. "It’s fine, Maya. Just hop in."
