The Moment We Broke Up

After a car crash leaves her with a broken leg, Claire is rushed into surgery. Patrick Reed signs the consent form, then hurries off, saying something came up at home. Coming round, she sees his stepsister Eleanor's post in the family and friends group chat: a photo of Patrick cooking pig's trotters soup for her sprained ankle, geotagged in the next city.

When Claire calls, crying, Patrick snaps that Eleanor is his stepsister and accuses Claire of being dramatic over a minor accident. Eleanor laughs that the family is eating and he shouldn't take calls from outsiders. Patrick hangs up. Claire blocks his number and hires a caregiver, staying in the ward over half a month.

On discharge day Patrick arrives hours late, having driven Eleanor to the company. When Eleanor calls about racing again, he turns the car around and leaves Claire on a quiet road. Then her university senior calls: the orchestra needs a violinist to study in Sydney. Claire asks when she leaves.
