Before the Light Fades

Julian is a celebrated scientist whose devotion to research leaves no room for sentiment. In an interview, he calls himself a block of wood, says he does not understand love, and describes his wife as a responsibility rather than a partner. Their son, Leo, grew up in the shadow of a father who never celebrated birthdays or anniversaries.

Quietly, the wife folds away a medical report: her cancer is terminal, and the surgery offers only a twenty percent chance. She asks Leo not to tell Julian, who is flying to London for a seven-day conference and an award. She dies on the operating table while he is across the Atlantic.

Now a spectral form, she drifts from the hospital where Leo sobs beside her body to the conference hall where Julian stands at the center of attention. Watching him, she wonders whether her decades of devotion were foolish, and whether he ever saw her at all.
