The Perfect Wife Score

Julia has spent three years living under the Perfect Wife app, a scoring system her boyfriend Ryan Keller built to prove she is better than his ex, Claire Snyder. Every request, every mistake, every moment of need is measured in points, and Claire's whims always cost Julia more. When Julia's mother suffers a brain hemorrhage, she calls Ryan fifty-eight times and reaches only a busy signal; by the time she stops, her mother is gone.

At the funeral home the app finally grants her enough points to marry, but Julia deletes it. Ryan still calls, promising a wedding once she reaches seventy, while Claire mocks her in the background. At home he fills a thermos with the last soup her mother ever made and carries it to Claire's family, calling Julia heartless when she objects.

As the door slams and another penalty appears, Julia remembers the rain three days ago, the man who never came, and the car that hit her.
