Story

The story

On his deathbed, a father arranges his daughter's marriage to Weston Cole, the coldest venture capitalist in New York, to settle a life debt the Coles owe. Before signing, she adds three conditions: no romance, only profit-sharing; separate lives; and if a True Love ever appears, she leaves at once with double the severance. Weston signs without hesitation, and the marriage becomes a merger of separate rooms and separate schedules.

Three years later, a teenage boy named Leo knocks on the penthouse door, claiming to be Weston's seventeen-year-old son. Weston does not deny it. Seeing the double severance clause finally within reach, she welcomes Leo in, calculating the fortune that would fund her life as a rich divorcée—and quietly consults Lawyer Daniels about whether a hidden heir counts as proof of True Love.

When Weston moves Leo in to transfer schools, she plays the gracious host while the question of the divorce settlement hangs unspoken between them.

Opening excerpt

My father arranged a marriage for me on his deathbed.

The groom was Weston Cole. If you follow Wall Street, you know the name. He’s the coldest, most ruthless venture capitalist in New York.

Before I moved into his penthouse, I set three strict rules for myself:

Keep it business. Collect the dividends, forget the feelings.

Total autonomy. He does his thing; I do mine.

If a "True Love" ever appears at his door, I pack my bags immediately—provided I get double the severance pay.

Weston seemed perfectly satisfied with how pragmatic I was.
