Story
The story
Sarah, a retired university teacher, has not seen her daughter Jessica in years. Then Jessica appears on a popular daytime talk show, weeping that her mother told her to go die, never visited her in the hospital after a suicide attempt, and cut her off without a word. The studio audience and viewers erupt in outrage, and the hate spills into Sarah's life: her name is pulled from her university's distinguished faculty page, her husband Rob is pushed to take leave before his retirement, and their door is spray-painted with curses.
Sarah refuses the show's offer of a televised reconciliation, remembering the day Jessica jumped from their fourth-floor hallway window and survived on a pile of junk below. She sees the interview as a fraudulent performance, but the online mob, a drone banner calling for her death, and the involvement of Jessica's husband Kyle leave her isolated and hospitalized.
As the pressure mounts, Sarah holds to her silence, convinced Jessica is using public opinion to force her hand.

“Before I was fifteen, I was the happiest kid in the world,” she told the host, her voice trembling. “But then, my mother just… changed.”
“When I was so depressed I wanted to kill myself, my own mother told me to go ahead and die.”
“From that year on, she barely spoke to me. She didn't even come to my wedding, or see her own grandchild.”
“I don’t know why she did it,” she sobbed, looking directly into the camera. “But no matter what, I want to say, ‘Mom, I will always love you.’”
