Story

The story

Sienna's Beta boyfriend, Drew, brings Laura and her daughter, Anne, along on a trip to the amusement park. When the car is one seat short, Drew orders Sienna out and leaves her by the roadside, promising to return for her later. She waits three hours in the scorching sun, then watches Laura's posts of the fireworks and feast, where Drew stays to help Laura light fireworks and says Sienna won't mind.

As night falls, Drew still hasn't come back. Sienna slips off her engagement ring, realizing the marking ceremony she awaited is likely not happening. Back at the villa, she packs to leave, ignoring Drew's calls, remembering how Laura once looked at her with disdain when she returned home as a child.

Drew finally drives back at dawn, but the road is empty. A wave of panic fills him, as if he has lost something irreplaceable.

Opening excerpt

When we were about to head to the amusement park, my Beta boyfriend, Drew, brought along a woman and her daughter.

There happened to be one seat short in the car.

Drew told me to get out and give my seat to the two of them.

“Laura has a kid with her. Let them go first. I’ll come back for you later,” he said.

I calmly stepped out and watched as the car slowly pulled away from the pack.
