One morning, Savannah Finch wakes to find numbers floating above every head in Crescent Bay. Her parents carry thousands; strangers carry single digits. When their numbers tick down by one in a single day, she realizes the figures may be the number of times she will ever see each person again.

At the Montgomery estate, the number above her childhood tormentor, Rhys Montgomery, reads only three. Certain he is dying, Savannah clings to him through board meetings and restroom doors, refusing to let him out of her sight. Rhys assumes she is paying off a dare from Tatum Bell, but Savannah's terror only deepens when Tatum's own number proves shockingly small, just as Tatum reveals her stepmother is sending her overseas.
