Half a Severed Finger

A man returns home to find the peephole on his front door gone, replaced by a hollow socket. Inside that peephole he had hidden half of a severed finger. His security feed shows a masked intruder picked the lock with a bent wire, then froze upon finding the finger on the floor. Outside the door, the man pretends to search for his keys while his blind partner, Grace, waits beside him, unaware of anything wrong.

He guides Grace inside and, once she is settled, seals the kitchen and turns on the gas stove, the quietest way to put a rat to sleep. He sits with Grace on the balcony as she listens to the rain, then finishes the intruder and disposes of the body in a sewer hatch. Back home, Grace is awake, hearing a dripping sound from the bathroom. Dark red droplets seep through the ceiling, and upstairs he finds a clogged drain, a pocketknife and a silver bracelet tangled in wet hair, both terribly familiar.
