Story

The story

Skylar keeps a curated roster of backups, and when her roommate Phoebe Davis mocks her, Skylar offers to transfer one of them for ten thousand dollars. Phoebe, egged on by imagined comments, pays and takes over the account of Ashton Lennox, a supposedly broke college student.

Weeks later Phoebe returns with a diamond necklace worth over two million dollars, boasting that Ashton bought it for her, while he only ever gave Skylar cheap coffee. Skylar knows the truth: Ashton is a wealthy player who hid his money, and she had pursued him deliberately until he ignored her hospital plea.

Now Phoebe believes she has won, but Skylar quietly moves on to other prospects, leaving Phoebe to discover what she has really bought.

The moment my roommate, Phoebe Davis, learned I had three guys waiting in the wings—a solid, well-curated roster of backups—she let out a laugh that was half-joke, half-condescending snicker.

“Honestly, I feel bad for your future husband,” Phoebe said, swiping through TikTok on her phone. “He’s going to drain his 401k just for the down payment on a wife who’s already been driven around the block a few times.”
