Story

The story

Nina's brother died in a fire saving her three best friends, who then took turns acting as her boyfriend out of a debt to him. Now Robby, Sean and Ian have tired of the arrangement, openly wishing to marry her off or send her away once they graduate, and Ian wants her to end things with him.

At her birthday party, the three fill the house with strangers who ignore her, while Ian lets the housekeeper, Rosie, cling to him. Nina refuses to give them the jealous scene they expect. Instead she walks up to Kian Archer, a young new lecturer and guidance counselor, and demands his name and a dance. He greets her warmly and offers her a gift, and as she finally reaches for his hand, a crash draws every eye across the room.

Opening excerpt

After that, they started taking care of me, rotating the duty of being my boyfriend. But it didn’t take long for them to grow sick of it.

Robby was the first to crack. “I can’t stand her goddamn attitude anymore,” he’d snapped. “Can we just ship her off to a psychiatric hospital?”
