Story

The story

Seven years after her engagement party ended in humiliation, Elara Hayes returns to New York and is confronted at the airport by Jessica, her ex-fiancé's sister, who demands she apologize to Julian Vance. Elara refuses, revealing she is married and has a daughter in kindergarten. Jessica insists the child must be Julian's and that Elara threw away a life with a powerful, wealthy man.

Elara remembers the truth: at the party Julian publicly accused her of carrying another man's child and flung doctored photographs at her, then left with his assistant, Melissa Monroe. His mother later admitted the photos were fake but offered three million dollars to end the pregnancy, naming Melissa as Julian's intended wife.

When Elara goes to meet her daughter Lily at preschool, Julian pins her against a wall, accusing her of playing a childish game to get back at him.

She cornered me by the baggage claim, her arms crossed. "It's been seven years, Elara. Don't you think it's time you apologized to my brother?"

Her brother, Julian Vance, was the man I almost married. Seven years ago, at our engagement party, in front of everyone we knew, he had shattered my world. He’d publicly called off our wedding, accusing me of carrying another man's child. He wished me a long and happy life with my "lover" before taking his young assistant's hand and walking out, leaving me in the ruins.

But there was no lover. There never had been.
