Story
The story
For six years, Naomi has been the one to beg. Her boyfriend Dylan demands total submission, and every quarrel ends with her groveling—standing in freezing rain with a fever, handwriting a hundred-page apology, unfurling banners outside his office. Then her best friend Amber steps in, slapping Dylan and fighting Naomi's battles for her.
Soon Amber is at their apartment more than her own, with a daybed in the master bedroom and bunny slippers that were never Naomi's size. Locked out for the seventh time, Naomi hears the delivery guy joke that Dylan always opens the door for the short-haired girl. Dylan's icy mask melts the moment he sees Amber, and the truth lands: he was never angry at Naomi. He just missed her.
Dylan cooks Amber's favorite foods, drives her across town, and backs down for the first time in six years at a single word from her. Watching them, Naomi quietly files for a transfer to Seattle.
Opening excerpt
The first time, I stood out in the freezing rain with a hundred-and-two-degree fever all night.
The second time, I pulled three consecutive all-nighters to handwrite a hundred-page letter of apology.
The third time, I unfurled a massive "I'm Sorry" banner in front of his corporate office building.
By the eighth time, my best friend, Amber, finally snapped. She stormed over and slapped him across the face in front of everyone.
