Story

The story

Ian promised his dying best friend Scott Hawkins that he would keep using Scott's online account to gently end things with the girlfriend Scott had never met in person. For three years Ian pretended to be Scott, helping her through her depression and back into her career, before finally sending a message that it was over.

At that exact moment, his fiancée Natalie Fisher's phone lit up with the same message. Ian realises the woman he is about to marry is the stranger he has been comforting online, and that she is still desperately in love with "Scott". When he collapses at home with a ruptured appendix, Natalie dismisses his call as a threat and rushes to the airport, leaving him to call for help alone.

With tears in my eyes, I promised him I would.

For the next three years, I pretended to be Scott.
