Story
The story
June has spent four years following her boyfriend Theo everywhere he wanted to go. When graduation arrives, she asks for one trip of her own: a quiet coastal town. Theo agrees easily, but a week before they leave, his childhood best friend Summer drops a Montana backcountry route into the group chat, and Theo's plans shift without a word for June.
June swallows her disappointment, cancels the coast, and quietly plans the entire mountain trip herself. On the road, she is pushed into the back seat, dismissed as uptight, and mocked for caring when Theo's stomach rebels. Then, at a foggy highway rest stop, Theo and Summer drive off without her, and his call brings only irritation, not panic.
Standing alone under a bruised sky, June stops chasing them. She cancels the rest of the reservations and books a ticket to the coastal town they called boring.
Opening excerpt
It took them half an hour of driving before they even realized my seat was empty.
When Theo finally called, there was no panic in his voice—only irritation.
"June, why aren't you in the car?"
"Come on, stop messing around. We're chasing the sunset and we can't turn back now."
