Story

The story

After his sister Savannah's slap ruptures his eardrum, Elias Bellweather learns he also has terminal blood cancer. He returns home silent and compliant, giving away everything he owns to Grant Everett, the man Savannah trusts above him. She reads his quiet as a months-long sulk, testing him while Grant spends the last of their grandmother's gift and turns her further against him.

When Savannah finds his pill bottle, Grant's lie has already poisoned it: she calls Elias an addict, strikes his ruined ear again, and forbids him to leave the house. He begs her to have him tested, but she will not listen.

With no one left to believe him, Elias must decide how to spend the time he has.

Opening excerpt

She gripped my wrist so tightly it felt like a cuff, her eyes blazing red.

“You ran away because I slapped you once? Are you trying to kill me with worry, Elias?”

“How long are you going to keep this up? I’m begging you, just be reasonable—be more like Grant, okay?”

This time, I didn’t explain. I didn't fight back.
