Story
The story
Josie has always seen a number above every person's head: the exact count of times she will ever lay eyes on them before they leave her life. For Declan, the boy from the apartment across the hall, that number was 31,441 — larger than anyone else's — so for nineteen years she treated him as her destined husband, chasing off every girl and laying down rules he half-heartedly indulged.
Then Declan shows her a photo of his quiet roommate, and an endless golden string of digits glows above the stranger's head. The number over Declan plummets to a single 9. When she asks for the roommate's number, Declan's screen goes black, and an unanswered call from Audrey lights up his phone.
Walking home through the October rain, Josie lets him go without a fight. Then she spots a tall boy in a black canvas jacket ahead of her, carrying the impossible number that once belonged to Declan.
Opening excerpt
For strangers passing on the sidewalk, it’s almost always a "1". For Declan, the boy who grew up next door, the number floating above his messy dark hair was "31,441".
Because of that astronomical number, I spent the better part of nineteen years treating him like my husband-in-training.
