Story
The story
Ethan runs a bakery and is finishing the last order before New Year's Eve: a custom anniversary cake for a college student named Lucas, who wants his girlfriend's portrait painted on it. When Lucas sends reference photos, Ethan recognizes the woman instantly. She is Rachel, his wife of seven years, and the mother of their five-year-old daughter, Emma.
Lucas, twenty-one, brags about how his girlfriend is a corporate lawyer who gave him three thousand dollars and is staying in town for their one-year anniversary. Then Rachel's voice comes through Lucas's phone, promising to meet him after work. Moments later she calls Ethan with a last-minute emergency at her firm, canceling their holiday trip to his parents' house.
Ethan says nothing. He asks her to FaceTime Emma tonight, then searches Lucas's profile and finds a year of photos of the two of them, his honeymoon pendant around her neck and her wedding band replaced by a matching promise ring. He knows she is lying, and he waits to see which one she chooses.
Opening excerpt
"She’s super busy with work, but she’s still taking time off to spend the holidays with me. This cake is just for her!"
Looking at the photo the customer sent, my stomach dropped.
Isn't that my wife of seven years?
How could she be this kid’s girlfriend?
Maybe they just looked alike.
But the moment I handed him the cake box, his phone rang. My wife’s voice came through loud and clear.
"Babe, I'm getting off work soon. If you're not there when I walk out, our date tonight is officially canceled!"
It was the last order before the New Year’s Eve rush.
