Story
The story
Simon McKinnon, heir to a vast fortune, wakes on the day his dying father urges him to choose a bride from a marriage lottery. He remembers a past life in which he married Anna Hayes, a woman who claimed to be a reincarnated celestial maiden, demanded his celibacy and a vasectomy, and spent his wealth on her hidden lover, Sterling Fumero. In that life, she and Sterling pulled his oxygen tube as he lay dying.
Now Simon refuses the lottery and turns Anna away at his father's funeral, where she and Sterling, robed as a pious monk, lecture him and reach for his mother's diamond watch. Simon seizes Sterling's wrist, finds pollen hidden under his nails, and exposes the theft, declaring the McKinnon family will fund Anna no longer.
He orders his secretary Ethan to freeze her credit cards, and in a boutique Anna's unlimited card is declined before her eyes.
Opening excerpt
I was a man of immense wealth, with a trust fund in the tens of billions. Money was the only thing I had left. Almost the entire city was under my ownership, including the tranquil retreat where my wife, Anna Hayes, resided.
In my past life, Anna claimed she was a celestial maiden reincarnated, unfit for the company of men. She even demanded I undergo a vasectomy, and I, besotted, complied. Decades passed. When I was old, my hair white, and gravely ill, she stood over me.
