Ruined Salvation: When Hope Becomes a Curse

Elisa Court and Sean Quinton are both dying. Their ship sank in an uncharted wastewater zone, and the contaminated water left them with a lung infection no doctor knows how to treat. Sean clings to hope: once Elisa dies, her body will be the first sample of the infection, dissected and studied to cure him. So his daily task becomes urging her to die.

Elisa refuses to save him again. Divorced after Sean framed her for adultery and left her penniless, she sells everything she owns to pay for a month of chemotherapy, buying time so the doctors will have less chance to study her corpse. When she finally leaves the hospital, she returns to the marital home, where the gas leak Sean never bothered to fix is still hissing.

As she calls Sean one last time, he and his assistant mock her, and he threatens to cut off her treatment. But Elisa has already chosen a death that will ruin his plans, and she will not wait for him any longer.
