Moonset, Stars Fade

After her ex-husband Jacob tells an interviewer that his only mistake was loving the wrong woman, a news bulletin reports that two bodies have been found on East Mountain: a woman and a child, both brutally murdered. Vera, now pregnant with Jacob's child, freezes at the news, while the ghosts of Jacob's murdered ex-wife Eleanor and their daughter Bella watch unseen.

Eleanor had once been Vera's closest friend, and it was Eleanor who asked Jacob to give Vera a job. When three-year-old Bella was kidnapped, Eleanor went alone to the abandoned warehouse on East Mountain with the ransom, and Vera ordered the kidnappers to kill them both. Vera then forged photographs and records to convince Jacob that Eleanor had run off with a lover and the company's money. Jacob believed her, called off the search, and married Vera.

Bound to Jacob's side in death, Eleanor and Bella can only watch as he dotes on Vera and her unborn child. When the police call to say the bodies may be Eleanor and her daughter, Jacob dismisses it as a scam and hangs up, insisting he knows no one named Eleanor Vance.
