Story

The story

When her mother, Valerie, divorces her gambling-addict father and takes her younger brother, Justin, leaving her behind, Casey can see a floating Favorability Meter that still glows at 100%. She refuses to believe her mother stopped loving her, but every attempt to reach Valerie ends in rejection and violence. Meanwhile, Frank, her father, drowns in debt and beats her, and she imagines Justin living in luxury.

At her lowest, a mysterious Feed reveals the truth: Valerie has stage four stomach cancer, and Frank has bound her to a System that electrocutes Casey to death unless Valerie favors Justin. Valerie's cruelty is a shield, and her will leaves everything to Casey. Armed with this knowledge, Casey fights back, determined to free her mother from the System's grip.

Her path leads her to a pharmaceutical magnate named Victor and his experimental cancer drug, and to a desperate confrontation with Justin and Valerie. As Frank threatens to kill her for ransom, Casey vows to save the mother who sacrificed everything for her.

Opening excerpt

The thing is, I could see the Truth. Above her head, a floating translucent bar—a "Favorability Meter"—glowed a steady, mocking 100%.

I refused to believe she didn’t love me. I tracked her down to her new house, desperate for an explanation, only to have her slap me across the face so hard my vision blurred.

"Get out of here, you brat! Stop stalking us!"

Maybe she was afraid I’d keep coming back, because she and Justin vanished that night. I heard through the grapevine that every house they moved into was more palatial than the last.
