Story

The story

Seventeen-year-old Maya has spent her life in a dead-end Appalachian town, where her father Dale rules through cruelty and her mother Clara is treated as little more than a servant. When Clara is diagnosed with terminal cancer and the two climb to a rooftop to end their suffering together, strange words appear before Maya's eyes: Clara is the long-lost daughter of the billionaire Vance family, and Dale has taken out a million-dollar life insurance policy on them both.

Maya pulls her mother back from the ledge and drags her to a public library, where a news article confirms a Chicago family's forty-year search for their missing daughter. With her last coins, Maya phones the number and insists she has real information. A sleek black car soon arrives, and a tall man with her mother's eyes steps out.

At the hospital, a DNA test confirms the impossible. Maya has gambled everything on a single call, and now her mother may finally be loved as she deserves.

My dad was a cheat and a monster. My cousin led the charge to make my life a living hell at school, forcing me to drop out.

The day my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer, we held hands and walked to the roof of the tallest building in our dead-end town.

The wind was howling. Mom’s voice trembled. "Maya, honey, I can't be a burden to you…"

Tears streamed down my face as I nodded and took a half-step toward the edge.
