Story
The story
Julian Sterling has just won the Global Philanthropist Award, and on live television he calls the person he most regrets losing: Lily, the wife who left him seven years ago. She answers only to ask for money, and he hangs up in disgust, certain she abandoned him for wealth. He does not know that when his heart was failing, she secretly gave him her own and took a cheap artificial heart with a seven-year lifespan in its place.
Now that lifespan is ending. Lily cannot afford the replacement surgery, and her failing mechanical heart sends its warnings while Julian arrives at her hospital with his new girlfriend, Claire, who mocks her. When her medical records scatter at his feet, Julian accuses her of fraud rather than reading the truth. Claire's feigned pity hardens his contempt, and he walks away.
Only Lily knows the heart beating in his chest is hers, and the machine inside her is running out of time.
Opening excerpt
The host on TV asked Julian to call the person he regretted losing the most.
Without hesitation, he dialed my number.
I picked up, listening as Julian asked, "Do you regret leaving me for money back then?"
I glanced at the exorbitant bill for the heart replacement surgery and chuckled softly. "Julian, since you're so rich now, lend me twenty grand, will you?"
