Story

The story

A wife borrows her husband Koah Quinn's phone for navigation and sees a notification: an automatic transfer has gone through. Then a message arrives from his ex-girlfriend, Wanda Blake, thanking him for this month's 10,000 dollars in child support. Koah has always claimed the money he sends each month covers medical treatment for his mother.

Cornered, Koah admits he has been sending the money for two years, since Wanda divorced, and that he took it from the downpayment saved for their new home — money her late parents left her. Their son Charlie is about to start elementary school, and without an apartment in the school district, how will he enroll? Koah's diary notes reveal weekends spent with Wanda and her son Timothy Blake while Charlie waited in vain for his father.

When she demands he call Wanda and get the money back, Koah refuses, asking her to show compassion for a single mother. Their son wakes in the back seat as they drive toward North Bay Elementary School, and the reckoning is postponed until they get home.

Immediately after that, his ex-girlfriend, Wanda Blake, sent him a message on WhatsApp:

[I’ve received this month’s 10,000 dollars for child support. Thank you, Koah. I don't know what I would have done without you.]

I froze.

“Child support?

“Koah, you told me that the money you send every month was for medical expenses for your mother’s treatment!”
